Requirements regarding camping in Hawaii vary by jurisdiction, island, campsite, and facilities. The following information applies to the Island of Hawaii (Big Island)

The following information applies to camping in Big Island's County Parks. For additional information please contact the above office.
  • Tent camping and recreation vehicle campers only. (Recreation vehicles are permitted to park in the campground parking area provided vehicular and pedestrian access is not obstructed.)
  • Cabins are not available.
  • Permits must be obtained in advance of camping and are required for both tent camping and recreational vehicle campers.
  • Applicants must be age 18 or older.
  • Permits may be obtained in person from the above office or a Satellite office. Allow at least 2 or 3 weeks to process a permit by mail.
  • Permits can also be obtained on-line via the County's Internet Reservation System.
  • All permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis according to campsite availability.
  • Reservations are made upon receipt of payment for the permit. Reservations can only be made for up to one year in advance of camping.
  • In summer, during June through August, camping at the same campground is restricted to a cumulative total of 7 nights (e.g. if a person camps 5 nights in June plus 2 nights in July at the same campground, they will not be able to camp there again until after August. Similarly, if a person spends 7 consecutive nights at the same campground, they will not be able to camp there again until after August).
  • During September through May a cumulative total of 14 nights at the same campground is allowed.
  • Fees for tent camping are adult (18 years and over) $5.00 per night; junior (13 to 17 years old) $2.00 per night; children (age 12 and under) $1.00 per night. (Fees for Reservations made via the County's Internet Reservation System are $6.00 per night per adult; $2.25 per night per junior; $1.00 per night per child.)
  • The County of Hawaii, Department of Parks & Recreation, is currently implementing a plan, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to make Big Island county parks accessible to persons with disabilities. As improvements are being made on an incremental basis, please contact the above office for information on the current accessibility of the Big Island's county park sites including wheelchair access and availability of an ADA campsite.

HOOKENA BEACH PARK

Hookena
(South Kona District)
Facilities include pavilion, restrooms, outdoor shower and picnic area. Sandy beach - snorkeling and swimming under favorable conditions. Fishing. Drinking water.

ISAAC HALE BEACH PARK

Pohoiki
(Puna District)
Facilities include pavilion, restrooms and picnic area. Fishing. Not recommended for swimming or snorkeling. Drinking water.

KAPAA BEACH PARK

Kapaa
(North Kohala District)
Campsite located near Lapakahi State Historical Park. Facilities include pavilion and restrooms. Fishing. No drinking water. Not recommended for swimming or snorkeling.

KOLEKOLE BEACH PARK

Wailea
(South Hilo District)
A popular and pretty campsite with a nearby waterfall and swimming hole. Near Akaka Falls. The beach is rocky and fronts a treacherous ocean - no swimming or snorkeling. Facilities include pavilion, restrooms, outdoor shower and picnic area. Electricity in pavilion and restrooms. Fishing. No drinking water.

LAUPAHOEHOE POINT BEACH PARK

Laupahoehoe
(North Hilo District)
Popular campsite in remote and beautiful area affording wonderful views. Facilities include pavilion, restrooms, outdoor shower, drinking water and picnic area. Electricity in pavilion and restrooms. Fishing. No swimming or snorkeling.

MAHUKONA BEACH PARK

Mahukona
(North Kohala District)
Rocky shoreline. Facilities include pavilion, restrooms, outdoor shower and picnic area. Electricity in pavilion and restrooms. Snorkeling and swimming under favorable conditions. Fishing. No drinking water.

MILOLII BEACH PARK

Milolii
(South Kona District)
Located near one of the last remaining Hawaiian fishing villages. Please respect their privacy. Access is approx. 5 miles down a steep, windy road. Facilities include restrooms and picnic area. Fishing. No drinking water. No swimming or snorkeling.

PUNALUU BLACK SAND BEACH PARK

Punaluu
(Kau District)
Good campsite. Located on a black sand beach - home to the endangered green sea turtle. Not recommended for swimming or snorkeling. Approx. 20 minutes driving time from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Picnic area, pavilion, restrooms, outdoor shower, drinking water. Electricity in pavilion and restrooms. Fishing.

SAMUEL M. SPENCER BEACH PARK

Kawaihae
(South Kohala District)
One of the best campsites in the Kohala district. Within walking distance of Puu Kohola Heiau, a National Historical Site. Facilities include pavilion, restrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, drinking water and picnic area. Electricity in pavilion and restrooms. Snorkeling and swimming under favorable conditions. Fishing. Lifeguard service on weekends & holidays only.

WHITTINGTON BEACH PARK

Honuapo
(Kau District)
Located between Naalehu (the southernmost town in the U.S.), and Punaluu Beach Park. Facilities include pavilion, restrooms, outdoor shower and picnic area. Electricity in pavilion and restrooms. Fishing. No drinking water. No swimming or snorkeling.
