As a non-profit arts organization, the Kahilu Theatre Foundation offers an annual season of live performances, first run films on weekends, youth programs, and invites artists to display their works in the theatre gallery on the evening of a performance. The spacious lobby and auditorium are reminiscent of the Art Deco days. Restoration of the Palace began in 1990 and when completed will provide a performance venue for the blend of ethnic groups that make up the Hawaiian culture. The Palace provides a mixed fare of weekend art films, occasional silent movies (with live organ accompaniment), productions of the Hilo Community Players, musical concerts ranging from Hawaiian to jazz to classical, and live statewide broadcasts over Hawaii Public Radio.
