VOLCANO ART CENTER

The Volcano Art Center is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, educational organization created in 1974 to promote, develop and perpetuate the artistic and cultural heritage of Hawaii's people and environment through activities in the visual, literary and performing arts. KONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY TOURS
Date: Ongoing
Place: Kalukalu (14 miles south of Kailua-Kona)
Offering a variety of guided tours, lectures, and exhibits including the Historic Kailua Village Walking Tour, the Kona Coffee Living History Farm Tour and more. For reservation & cost call (808) 323-3222. (Inquire about their breadmaking in their Portuguese oven!)

RANGER-LED PROGRAMS: HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Date: Daily
Ranger-led walks and hikes enrich your knowledge of the Park's resources and Hawaiian culture. Walks may be wheelchair accessible or may be longer hikes. The daily schedule of ranger presentations is posted each morning at 9:00 a.m. in the Kilauea Visitor Center. Call: (808) 985-6000 or visit their site.

NELHA PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS
Date: Every Wednesday and Thursday (excluding holidays)
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (Exhibit area open weekdays 8am-4pm)
Place: Keahole Point (one mile south of Kona Int'l Airport)
Ocean technology pioneers harness Arctic-cold deep seawater for the future of mankind. Visit the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) recognized world-wide as a unique and innovative business, research and science technology park. AFTER DARK IN THE PARK: HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

MA LALO O KA PO LANI (UNDER THE NIGHT'S SKY)
Date: Every 3rd Saturday of Each Month
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Place: Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station

AN EVENING IN THE PARK
Date: Every 1st or 2nd Wednesday of Each Month
Time: 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Place: Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park (S. Kona)

EVENING AT KAHUA RANCH - SUNSET DINNER
Date: Every Tues. & Thurs. through December 27
Place: Kahua Ranch (North Kohala)
Come visit an authentic 8,500 acre working cattle ranch owned by the Richards Family. Meet a member of the Family and learn about the Hawaiian Paniolo (cowboy). Transportation. Dinner. GRANDFATHER’S HOUSE: AN EXHIBITION ON KOREA
Date: Through December 31
Time: Monday through Saturday, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.
Place: Lyman Museum, 276 Haili Street, Hilo
Featuring a full-scale replica of a 1930s Korean home, this unique completely interactive exhibit offers hands-on opportunities to explore life in rural Korea during the 1930s. Call: (808) 935-5021.

MORNINGS AT THE PALACE - HAWAIIANA LIVE!
Date: Every Wednesday Morning (throughout 2007)
Time: 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.
Place: The Palace Theater, downtown Hilo
An educational and entertaining cultural program featuring live hula, the historic pipe organ, short films, commentary, and a segment with audience participation and interaction. Tickets are $5. Children 12 and under free. Call: Kimberly Bright (808) 934-7010.

CULTURAL DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM
Date: January through September (Call Park Headquarters for Date)
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12 Noon
Place: Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Kawaihae, S. Kohala
Cultural demonstration programs on Hawaiian crafts. Other special Hawaiian programs are presented throughout the year. Footpath, guided and self-guided tours, exhibits and interpretive talks, bird watching. Call: (808) 882-7218 or visit their site.

OBON FESTIVAL DANCES
Date: June through August
Place: Buddhist Temples throughout the islands
The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. Special services usually start at 7:00 p.m. followed by a festival with bon (folk) dance at 8:00 p.m. Held at different temples on different dates. Check newspapers for schedule.

HONU HALF IRONMAN TRIATHLON
Date: June 2
Place: Mauna Lani Resort (Kohala District)
Half Ironman distance qualifier for the Ironman Triathlon World
Championships in Kona. Features 30 Continental USA or International slots, 20 Hawaii state resident slots and 35 Hawaii Big Island resident slots. Swim at beautiful Hapuna Beach, bike on the Ironman Kona course to Hawi, run on the scenic grounds of the Mauna Lani Resort. Call: Information (808) 329-0063.

LOMI LOMI WITH AUNTY MARY FRAGAS AND PAPA K KEPILINO
Date: June 8 - June 10
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Place: Hilo
Two of Hawaii's most well-known lomilomi practitioners will lead this hands-on workshop where you will have the opportunity to learn the basic techniques of two different styles of lomi lomi. You will learn Hawaiian pule, prayer, the elements of lomilomi, how to make adjustments in the body, basic use of laau lapaau, be introduced to healing with the breath of Ha, an ancient healing technique and work with others under the watchful eyes of two lomilomi masters. STILLNESS AND FLOW: A PHOTOGRAPHY / TAI CHI WORKSHOP
Date: June 4 - 10
Place: Akiko's Bed & Breakfast - Wailea Village, Hamakua Coast
Come to the Big Island of Hawaii for a unique workshop with Doug Beasley which combines photography and the ancient art of taiji chuan. Practice the ancient art of taiji & the healing art of chi quong with Sifu Peter Tam Hoy. Travel to the volcano, the rugged Puna coast, the Hamakua rain forest and points unknown. NORTH KOHALA KAMEHAMEHA DAY CELEBRATION
Date: June 11
Place: The small communities of Kapaau & Hawi in the N. Kohala District
Celebrate Kamehameha Day in the King's North Kohala birthplace. Festivities start at 8am with lei-draping ceremonies at the King's original statue in Kapaau. At 9am, the highway closes for a traditional pau parade with horses and riders adorned in flowers and colors representing each Hawaiian Island. The parade goes from central Hawi to the statue in Kapaau. The Hoolaulea (music festival) begins after the parade and continues until 4pm at the Kohala Cultural Center. Free. 13TH ANNUAL DOLPHIN DAYS
Date: June 14 - 17
Place: Hilton Waikoloa Village (Kohala Coast)
Dolphin Days is an annual four-day festival of events inspired by the playful dolphins at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Dolphin Quest Learning Lagoon and is designed to benefit Hawaii Shriners Hospital for Children and the Pacific Marine Life Foundation. Events include an opening dinner, luau, golf and tennis tournaments, dolphin programs and the signature event - The Great Waikoloa Food, Wine and Music Festival. Over two dozen of Hawaii’s most talented chefs will prepare culinary specialties, paired with a wide selection of fine wines, brews and spirits and world-class jazz entertainment. PARKER RANCH 160TH CELEBRATION HISTORIC TRAIL RIDE & BBQ
Date: June 17
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Place: Parker Ranch's Pukalani Stables
This Father’s Day ride will travel past historic ranch sites. Along the way, trail guides will share historical knowledge of the area. Ride concludes with a wrangler’s barbecue. 2007 RELAY FOR LIFE AT KONA

Time: 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.
Place: Old Airport Soccer Field, Kona
Relay For Life is a team event that increases cancer awareness in our community! Families, schools, companies, hospitals, and other community groups create teams of 8 to 15 people who take turns walking around a track all night to raise money to find a cure!
