Always wanted to learn how to make lei? Now’s your chance! Volcano Art Center sponsors "Lei Making" with Hawaiian cultural studies teacher Loke Kamanu on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Volcano Village. In this hands-on workshop, participants make two types of lei and take home their creations. They learn lei kui, a sewing style, using various foliage and flowers and lei wili, a twisting style, using ti leaf and floral add-ins. Kamanu also offers mana‘o and stories about lei, including proper ways to pick native plants, types of flowers and when and why they are used, and lei giving etiquette. this Lei Making workshop is open to ages 13 and up, residents and visitors alike. Artists from the Volcano Village Artists Hui will be demonstrating their skills in a many media. Free demonstrations and hands-on activities will include creating hand-made books, sculpting clay, throwing on the potter�s wheel, a pottery pit firing, metal tooling, paper collage, fiber arts, and wood block printing. Come enjoy a day of free fun, learn how local artists create their unique works, and try your hand at a variety of creative projects. Delicious gourmet lunches will be available for purchase.
