Wendy Maruyama is in the forefront of contemporary studio furniture makers. Her work is characterized by a sense of character and emotion, the bold use of pop culture iconography, and dualities - Eastern/Western, Traditional/Contemporary, Feminine/Masculine, Maruyama is professor emeritus of the Furniture Design & Woodworking Program at San Diego State University and has been making furniture/art since 1970. Her work is often inspired by extended residencies and visits to various countries such as France, England, Japan, Korea and China. Join us for this special tour of KBCC, which isn’t open to the general public. See and learn about native birds that the facility houses, including the ‘alala (Hawaiian crow), which is extinct in the wild; the palila, a finch-billed honeycreeper found only on the slopes of Mauna Kea; the Maui parrotbill, an insectivorous Hawaiian honeycreeper; and the puaiohi, or small Kaua‘i thrush. Since the tour is during breeding season, we may even have the unique chance to see chicks being fed.

Please join us for this exciting new program, in which a kumu hula (hula teacher/master) and botanist team up for a cultural and scientific exploration of the plants used in hula. From Ab Kawainohoikala‘i Valencia, learn about hula plants as kino lau, manifestations of Hawaiian deities in plant form (as his Halau Hula Kalehuaki‘eki‘eika‘iu understands them). There are plants for the hula altar, the kuahu, which include maile, ‘ie‘ie, ‘ilima, lehua, and halapepe. Plus, there are adornments— mele hula plants that are worn by the dancers—which include maile, ‘ilima, and lehua, plus palapalai, ‘a‘ali‘i, pukiawe, and ‘olapa.

Sonny Tanabe is known for many things: U.S. Olympic swimmer; high school water polo and swimming coach; American Red Cross Water Safety and SCUBA instructor, just to name a few. This presentation is more about one of his other loves: spearfishing. Sonny has recently authored his second book, “Evolution of Freediving and the History of Spearfishing in Hawai`i” after finishing his beautiful pictorial “Spearfishing on the Island of Hawai`i” in 2008. If you’re a waterman (or woman!) or just someone interested in Kona’s history as seen through the eyes of a waterman you do not want to miss this presentation! This is the April portion of a community lecture series for 2012 that spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai’i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. This special multi-image slideshow, set to music, features photos submitted during the first annual “Images from the Edge” photo contest. The public is invited to view a wide variety of intriguing images — from macro photography of native plants to surreal lavascapes — taken in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park by both amateur and professional photographers. Immediately following the slideshow, the contest finalists will be announced during a ceremony with judges Rick Decker and Alvis Upitis. All finalists’ photographs will later be exhibited at the Volcano Art Center Gallery, a co-sponsor of the event. This free slideshow takes place in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park at the Kilauea Visitor Center. In honor of National Park Week (April 21 to 29), park entrance is free all week.

The Kona Historical Society’s Portuguese Stone Oven is a reproduction of a typical oven used by the Portuguese immigrants who came to Kona in the 1880’s. Join the process of panning the dough and baking 96 loaves! The program is FREE and the bread is $7 per loaf. Bring your lunch and make a day of it with an oven-side picnic in the pasture. We hope to see you at the Portuguese Stone Oven in the pasture below KHS headquarters in Kealakekua.
