Preserving our Land - Perpetuating our Culture KIDS' KAUAI AT THE KAUAI CHILDREN'S DISCOVERY MUSEUM Date: Every Tuesday through Saturday (closed Sunday & Monday) Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Place: Kauai Village (Safeway) Shopping Center, Kapaa Kids' Kauai occupies the Kauai Children's Discovery Museum as a mini-island, providing a view of Kauai "from a kid's-eye-level". The main floor represents the island with exhibit stations describing the plants, animals, and natural history of Kauai. The accompanying Activity Table features different activities including printing on kapa (Hawaiian cloth made from pounded bark) to painting reef fish to solving puzzles! An outer ring of exhibits surrounding the floor represents Kauai's waterways (ocean, river & stream) and the life they support. $5/adults, $4/kids age 1-17. KAUAI MUSEUM / FREE TOUR Date: Every Monday through Friday Time: Mon. at 2:00 p.m., Tues-Fri. at 10:30 a.m. Place: Kauai Museum, 4428 Rice St., Lihue Free tour with admission. Docents provide interpretation of Kauai and Niihau culture as they lead tours through the Museum's Galleries. Call: (808) 245-6931. SHELL & SEED LEI DISPLAY Date: Every Wednesday Time: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Place: Kauai Museum, 4428 Rice Street, Lihue Display of rare Niihau Shell and seed lei from the collection of Lena Mendonca. HARBOR MALL FREE HULA SHOW Date: Every Wednesday (through December 31) Time: 12:15 p.m. Place: Harbor Mall, 3501 Rice Street, Lihue We are proud to welcome Kauai's Beloved Auntie Bev to Harbor Mall. Our Free Hula Show is open to spectators and any who wish to learn the art of Hula. Call: Rebecca (808) 245-6255. LAUHALA WORKSHOP Date: Once per month Time: 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Place: Kauai Museum, 4428 Rice Street, Lihue Fiber weaving workshop with Margaret Lovett Instructor. Fee $40 ($35 members). OHANA DAY FOR HAWAII RESIDENTS Date: 3rd Saturday of Every Month (through December 15) Time: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m. & 2 p.m. Place: National Tropical Botanical Garden, Allerton Garden, Poipu A 2-1/2 hour guided 1-mile walking tour. Reservations are required, and a credit card is needed to guarantee the reservation. Free to Hawaii residents with proof of residency. HISTORIC WAIMEA WALKING TOUR Date: Every Monday Time: 9:30 a.m. Place: West Kauai Technology & Visitors Center, Waimea Take a 90-minute walking tour and experience "A Glimpse of the Historic Waimea". Best known as the place English explorer Capt. James Cook first landed in Hawaii. Missionaries established schools; rice and sugar growers changed the landscape; and historic buildings were rebuilt after Hurricane Iniki. Enrich your historical knowledge about the town that was once a major population to ruling chiefs. Be sure to wear light clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Free. Call: (808) 338-1332. ALOHA FRIDAYS Date: March through October Time: 9:30 a.m. Place: West Kauai Technology & Visitors Center, Waimea Free workshops are held every Friday at the Center during March through October (flower season). Join us to "Learn the Art of Lei Making" which is the symbol of Aloha and "Create a Hawaiian Gift". Reservations recommended. Free. Call: (808) 338-1332. WALKING TOUR - OLD WAIMEA SUGAR PLANTATION Date: Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Time: 9:00 a.m. (Approx. 90 min. tours) Place: Waimea Plantation Cottages, Waimea (West Side) Volunteers lead you back in time through Waimea Plantation Cottages, a vacation resort of restored plantation houses, and the neighboring Waimea Sugar Co. "camp" of houses dating to the turn of the century. Learn about the immigrants that came from all over the world to build the sugar industry. Waimea Mill Sugar Company (1884-1969) was a family operation and was for many years the smallest sugar plantation in the Hawaiian Islands. KAUAI HISTORICAL SOCIETY - KAPAA HISTORY TOUR Date: Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Place: Kapaa (East Side) A 90-minute walking tour led by Kauai Historical Society's interpretive guides familiar with the history and architecture of Kapaa Town. KI HOALU - SLACK KEY GUITAR - MUSIC OF HAWAII Place: Hanalei Community Center - Hanalei, Kauai Weekly presentations include: history of slack key music; instruments; stories behind the songs; legends and stories of Hawaii; and live performances of Ki Hoalu music. HANAPEPE ART NIGHT Date: Every Friday Evening Time: 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Place: Hanapepe Every Friday night is unique. Participating galleries take turn being the weekly "host gallery", offering original performances or demonstrations which become the theme for that art night. All the galleries are lit up and decked out giving the town a special atmosphere. Enjoy a stroll down the streets of quaint, historic Hanapepe Town and meet the local artists. SAILING WITH LATA: THE ORIGINAL POLYNESIAN NAVIGATOR Date: Through October 31 Place: Kauai Museum, 4428 Rice St., Lihue A Polynesian story tells of Lata (Lake in Hawaii, Laa in Tahiti, Rata in New Zealand), the first person to build a canoe or vata. The Tuamokoan story of Lata is especially informative about how to build and sail an authentic vaka. The exhibit is made possible through the Vaka Taumoko Project of the Pacific Traditions Society. DARK CLOUDS OVER PARADISE: THE HAWAII INTERNEE STORY Date: Through October 31 Place: Kauai Museum, 4428 Rice St., Lihue Little is known about the compelling story of the Hawaii Japanese-Americans who were incarcerated during World War II. An educational traveling exhibit produced by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii on Oahu. Call: (808) 245-6931. OBON FESTIVAL DANCES Date: Through August Place: Buddhist Temples throughout the islands The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. Special services usually start at 7:00 p.m. followed by a festival with bon (folk) dance at 8:00 p.m. Held at different temples on different dates. Check newspapers for schedule. WONDER WALKS Dates: June through September (see below) June 3, 10, 17, 24 July 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 August 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 September 2, 9 Place: Kokee Natural History Museum, Kokee State Park Guided hikes led by the Museum's trained volunteer interpreters. All except 2 hikes start at 12:15 pm and return by 4:00 pm. The 2 exceptions are July 15 & August 26 which leave at 8:00 am and return around 2:00 pm. Call: (808) 335-9975 to register or visit their site. TROUT FISHING SEASON Date: August 4 - September 30 Place: Kokee State Park Fishing in streams and reservoir of Kokee State Park. Starts on first Saturday in August, continues for 16 consecutive days, then on weekends and holidays through to the end of September. Fishing license required.
