A WALK AND TALK WITH THE BIRDS

Join the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project for a 5-mile round trip hike in the Nature Conservancy's Waikamoi Preserve. alternativehawaii.com. Enjoy a cloud forest on the slope of Haleakala and experience Maui's native forest birds. Hike begins at 9 am. alternativehawaii.com. This event is part of a series of lectures and hikes that were made possible with support by Maui County-Hawaiian Tourism Authority. "IT'S FOR THE BIRDS" FUNDRAISER FOR THE MAUI FOREST BIRD RECOVERY PROJECT
Date: November 14th 2009, 4 pm - 8 pm
Place: Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center, Makawao, Maui

An evening celebration recognizing Maui's native forest bird species. Featuring music by Maui's very own talented musicians Halemanu and George Kahumoku, and a keynote presentation by Jack Jeffrey, one of Hawaii's most well-known conservationists and photographers, on Hawaii's unique endemic avifauna. There will be a silent auction, and complimentary pupus and fine wine included. Proceeds will go to future research and recovery of Maui's native forest birds. Tickets are $100 per person (portion tax deductible), and advanced reservations required.

MALAMA WAO AKUA: THE ART OF CONSERVATION
Date: October 23rd to November 10th 2009, from 10 am to 6 pm

East Maui Watershed Partnership and Viewpoints Gallery invite you to come and see the splendor of Maui's rainforests and other native ecosystems at the Malama Wao Akua juried art exhibition. The show is a celebration of native flora and fauna, and highlights the people that work to protect our 'aina. Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao is open daily 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. ANNIE - THE MUSICAL

Maui OnStage and Maui Academy of Performing Arts present the heartwarming musical Annie. Performances run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from November 27 to December 13 at the Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sundays at 3:00 pm with two additional Saturday matinees at 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 5 and 12. Tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for students and seniors for the evening shows. All seats on Sundays are $15. Tickets for the two Saturday matinees are deeply discounted to encourage families to attend: all student tickets are only $5 with a donation of two cans of food for the Maui Food Bank and adult and senior tickets are $15. HUI NOEAU VISUAL ARTS CENTER
Place: 2841 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao (Upcountry)
A unique paradise for the arts awaits you at the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center. They have art education programs for adults and children, art exhibits, and a gift shop, on an historic upcountry estate with magnificent grounds. Their mission is to encourage and promote the development of artistic expression and creativity in the individual and to stimulate a broader appreciation and understanding of the visual arts as a vital language in our culture. BAILEY HOUSE MUSEUM
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Closed Sundays.
Place: 2375-A Main St., Wailuku (Iao Valley)
Offers short courses and lectures in Hawaiian history and culture throughout the year as well as other events. Excellent Hawaiian arts and crafts can be found in the Museum Gift Shop. Classes and lectures open to visitors. Call: (808) 244-3326 or visit their site.

STOP BY THE LAHAINA VISITOR CENTER
Date: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily
Place: Historic Old Lahaina Courthouse at Banyan Tree Park, Lahaina
Staffed by community volunteers and managed by LahainaTown Action Committee, the Visitor Center's purpose is to provide free, friendly and unbiased information to visitors and others seeking cultural, historical or current knowledge about Lahaina and old LahainaTown. Call: (808) 667-9193.

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK
Date: Daily
Ongoing Ranger / Naturalist programs include guided walks, hikes, as well as programs on geology and natural and cultural history and 15 to 20 minute presentations. In the Summit area, special evening star watching programs are conducted periodically. Occasionally special all day and half day hikes, three day service trips, or full moon hikes are offered. ASTRONOMY TOUR OF THE STARS
Date: Nightly
Time: 8, 9 or 10 p.m. plus Fri. & Sat. at 11 p.m.
Place: Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, Kaanapali (West Maui)
A brilliant tour of the stars is given nightly on the roof for one hour. Astronomy-quality telescopes are set up for viewing pleasure by the star guide. Call: (808) 661-1234.

SUNSET CLIFF-DIVING
Date: Every evening
Place: Sheraton Maui, Kaanapali (West Maui)
The Sheraton Maui rests atop the famed black rock, Puu Kekaa, site of many Hawaiian legends. A torchlighting and cliff diving ceremony is enacted each evening right before sunset. The public can watch a young man in ancient Hawaiian garb light torches as he runs to the rock's summit. Perched at the top, he dives off the cliff into the calm waters surrounding the landmark. WHALERS VILLAGE ENTERTAINMENT
Place: Kaanapali Resort (West Maui)
Enjoy free entertainment and activities at Whalers Village Center Stage. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, watch Polynesian dances from 6:30 to 7 pm then Tahitian dances from 7:30 to 8 pm. Take a lei-making class on Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 2 pm or take a hula lesson from 3 to 4 pm on Thursdays. Sundays feature Sunset Jazz from 6 to 9 pm. STORIED PLACES OF EAST MAUI
Date: Daily (through December 31)
Place: Hana Cultural Center, Hana (East Maui)
East Maui is rich in mythological sites. Tales of Pele the volcano goddess, Maui the demi-god, Hina the moon goddess, Kamapuaa the rascal, pig god and many more who have walked the Hana district. Stories, photographs and artifacts. Call: (808) 248-8622.

EAST MAUI PLANTATION DAYS
Date: Daily (through November 11)
Place: Hana Cultural Center, 4974 Uakea Road, Hana (East Maui)
An exhibition of photographs, artifacts and stories from the Hana District's agricultural past along with an examination of the impact and the multicultural influences of plantation culture on the East Maui. Call: (808) 248-8622.

45 TON TALKS
Date: December-April every Tues.& Thurs.; May-November only on Tues.
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Place: Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale NMS, 726 South Kihei Road, Kihei
This free one hour "talk story" will highlight everything you want to know about humpback whales. Join Sanctuary volunteers and staff for an interactive fun-filled presentation perfect for all ages. Call: (808) 879-2818.

FRIDAY NIGHT IS ART NIGHT
Date: Every Friday Evening, Year-round
Time: 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Place: Lahaina Town (West Maui)
Stroll through dozens of art galleries in Lahaina Town for special gallery shows, featured artists-in-action, and refreshments, all free and open to the public! Lahaina has earned its nick-name of "The Art Capital of the Pacific," due to more art galleries per capita than any other American town. HE UI CULTURAL ARTS FESTIVAL
Date: Varied Weekend Schedule
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday)
Place: Lahaina (under the Banyan Tree)

THE MAUI PANIOLO DANCE ASSOCIATION
Date: Weekly
Place: Tavares (Pukalani) Community Center (Upcountry Maui)
The Maui Paniolo Dance Association is dedicated to country dancing on Maui. They meet once a week, offering free lesson(s) at the beginning hour. Open dance is from 8-10 PM. $3 donation requested. PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION EVENTS

FREE WHALE AND OCEAN INFORMATION
Date: November 30 - May 15
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Place: McGregor Point Lookout - (Honoapiilani Hwy near Maalaea)
Where else can you pull off the highway and see whale baleen, whale lice and other interesting whale displays? Pacific Whale Foundation's (PWF) Ocean Outreach Van is at this scenic lookout daily with interesting whale displays and free information about whales. PWF's Marine Research naturalists will be on hand to help you spot whales from one of the best shore-based whalewatching locations on Maui. Free. Call: (808) 879-8860 or visit the PWF site.
