CHANGING OF THE KING'S GUARD

THE CANOE: AN ALASKAN AND POLYNESIAN TRADITION EXHIBITION
Date: Through December 31

Indigenous cultures around the world share many similar practices - among them canoeing. This
exhibit, produced in cooperation with the Alaskan Native Heritage Center, presents a comparison
and contrast of Hawaiian and Alaskan canoe voyaging traditions. The Canoe also celebrates the
2007 January through March voyage of Hokulea, Ku Holo Mau (Sail On, Sail Always, Sail Forever),

OBON FESTIVAL DANCES
Date: June through August
Place: Buddhist Temples throughout the islands
The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and
cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening
of dance, music and merry-making. Special services usually start at 7:00 p.m. followed by a
festival with bon (folk) dance at 8:00 p.m. Held at different temples on different dates. Check
