After retiring the Hawaiian flag, the world renowned King’s Guard, dressed in uniforms that are the exact replicas of those worn by the Hawaiian Royal Palace Guard for King David Kalakaua in 1875, impress you with a spectacular performance of skill. THE CANOE: AN ALASKAN AND POLYNESIAN TRADITION EXHIBITION Date: Through December 31 Time: 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Place: Hawaii Maritime Center, Pier 7, Honolulu Harbor Indigenous cultures around the world share many similar practices - among them canoeing. This exhibit, produced in cooperation with the Alaskan Native Heritage Center, presents a comparison and contrast of Hawaiian and Alaskan canoe voyaging traditions. The Canoe also celebrates the 2007 January through March voyage of Hokulea, Ku Holo Mau (Sail On, Sail Always, Sail Forever), to the western Pacific and the island nations of Micronesia and Japan. Call: (808) 536-6373. NAVIGATING CULTURAL CONNECTIONS: HOKULEA'S VOYAGE TO JAPAN Date: Through June 1 Time: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Tues. - Sat.) Place: Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, 2454 South Beretania St., Honolulu Inspired by the Hokulea's voyage to Japan, this exhibition presented by the JCCH explores the historical and cultural connections between Hawaii and Japan over the past 150 years. These connections have ranged from friendship to war and back again and involve a wide range of colorful historical actors. The exhibition also examines the particular connections between Hawaii and various Japanese prefectures the Hokulea will be visiting on its voyage. Gallery visitors will also be able to follow the progress and current status of the Hokulea as it makes its way across the Pacific. OBON FESTIVAL DANCES Date: June through August Place: Buddhist Temples throughout the islands The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. Special services usually start at 7:00 p.m. followed by a festival with bon (folk) dance at 8:00 p.m. Held at different temples on different dates. Call: (808) 841-0170. 28TH ANNUAL PAN-PACIFIC FESTIVAL: MATSURI IN HAWAII (HAWAIIAN HALF MARATHON 2007 AND 5 MILE FUN RUN/WALK) Date: June 3 This half marathon starts off at 5:00 a.m. at Magic Island, goes through Waikiki, around Diamond Head, and finishes at Kapiolani Park, for a scenic and challenging run. Length is 13 miles, and the course is USATF certified. The fun run/walk is 5 miles long, and starts at 7:00 a.m., on Monsarrat Ave., next to the Waikiki Shell. The course will be two laps around Kapiolani Park. Call: (808) 926-8177 or email ppf@kihhnl.com. 135TH ANNUAL KING KAMEHAMEHA CELEBRATION Date: Friday June 8 & Saturday June 9 First declared a public holiday by a Royal Proclamation issued on December 22, 1871 by King Kamehameha V to honor his grandfather, King Kamehameha I, unifier of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Events today include a statue draping ceremony at the statue of Kamehameha the Great, in front of Honolulu Civic Center with 13 foot floral tributes, which are created throughout the day by volunteers - music & hula performances add to the colorful display - a photographer's delight (Friday, June 8 at 4:30 pm); plus the 91st annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade (Saturday, June 9 at 8:30 am) followed by the annual Na Hana Noeau o Ka Pakipika Festival at the Queen Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. The Festival includes cultural demonstrations, food, and entertainment. All events are free. Come and join us in a fun filled weekend (Fri., Sat., & Sun.)at the annual Pan-Pacific Festival--Matsuri in Hawaii. This annual event is a cross-cultural exchange between the people of Hawaii, Japan, Mainland USA and other Pan-Pacific regions. The Parade begins at King and Richards Streets, goes down Punchbowl Street onto Ala Moana Blvd, merges into Kalakaua Ave, and ends at the Queen Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. The annual Na Hana Noeau o Ka Pakipika Festival at the Queen Kapiolani Park follows the Parade featuring displays and comparisons of both Hawaiian and Japanese cultures, arts and crafts demonstrations, food, and entertainment. Blaisdell Arena, 777 Ward Avenue, Honolulu For the first time since 1993, the world's top sumo wrestlers face off in Hawaii for an earthshaking competition filled with the ritual and pageantry of Japan's revered national sport. Call: (808) 522-1333 or visit their site. 28TH ANNUAL PAN-PACIFIC FESTIVAL: MATSURI IN HAWAII (PAN-PACIFIC MATSURI PARADE) Date: Sunday, June 10 Time: 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Place: Kalakaua Avenue, from Fort DeRussy to Monsarrat Ave. by Kapiolani Park This is the main event for the Pan-Pacific Festival. Beginning at Fort DeRussy, the parade goes down Kalakaua Avenue, through the heart of Waikiki and ends at Kapiolani Park. There will be over 1000 marchers participating in the parade. During the parade, don't miss your opportunity to see groups that you will not get to see outside Japan. Don't miss the highlight of the parade, which will include the return of the Ushioni mikoshi as well as the Onbashira float. We will also have various high school bands from Hawaii and the Mainland U.S., local ethnic groups marching as well. Come see and support your favorite group.
