Requirements regarding camping in Hawaii vary by jurisdiction, island, campsite, and facilities. The following information applies to the Island of Maui. Note: Camping information is subject to change without notice. Please contact the applicable local office for current information.

The following information applies to camping and cabins at Maui's State Parks. For additional information and free site maps please contact the above office or visit the State Parks Website.
  • Campsites are open 7 days per week, all year.
  • Tent camping is permitted (self-contained mobile campers are not allowed). Cabins are available.
  • Permits are required for camping and cabins. Applicants must be age 18 or older.
  • Permit applications may be made in writing, by phone, or in person, and must be received at least 7 days before the camping/cabin event and no earlier than 1 year in advance. The Application for a State Parks Permit is available in PDF format on the Hawaii State Parks website.
  • Max. stay per permit at any one park is 5 consecutive nights.
  • Tent camping is $5.00 per campsite per night. Cabins are not free (see below).
  • Reservations are required for camping and cabins. If making reservations by phone, please have ready the names and I.D. for each person (Drivers License, Social Security, Passport, etc.).
  • Once the permit and reservation dates requested are tentatively approved, the full payment for camping fees and/or a 50% deposit for cabin fees is required within 2 weeks to confirm a reservation. Note: If the date of reservation is within 30 days, these payments are due immediately. The 50% balance for lodging fees is due upon arrival. (Contact the above office for payment and refund policy.)
  • Cabin Facilities: Single/duplex housekeeping cabins with 1-2 bedrooms, kitchen-living room, bathroom facilities.
  • The Division of State Parks is currently implementing a plan, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to make Hawaii's state parks accessible to persons with disabilities. As improvements are being made on an incremental basis, please contact the above office for information on the current accessibility of Maui's state park sites including wheelchair access and availability of an ADA cabin or campsite.


Located in Kula Forest Reserve - 9.7 miles upland from Kula on Waipoli Road off Kekaulike Avenue (Highway 377). A 4-wheel drive vehicle is required (road is often rough, muddy).
(Upcountry Maui)
10-acres within the fog belt of the Kula Forest Reserve at 6,200-foot elevation. Hiking (extensive trail system). Camping and one cabin. No showers (except in cabin), no drinking water, no electricity, and no refrigerator or towels. A wood burning stove is provided. You must bring your own fire wood. Rates: Tent camping $5 per campsite per night; cabin $45 per night for 1-4 people plus $5 for each additional person (ten persons maximum). Note: The Polipoli cabin is not available on Monday nights.


Located near Hana at end of Waianapanapa Road off Highway 360 (Hana Highway). Note: The drive to Waianapanapa takes approximately two hours from Kahului Airport.
(East Maui)
122.1-acre park in a wild, forested, low-cliffed, volcanic coastal setting. Black sand beach, ancient coastal trail to Hana. Picnicking, hiking, shore fishing. Excellent opportunity to study a seabird colony and anchialine pools. Other features include native hala forest, legendary cave, heiau (religious site), natural stone arch, sea stacks, and blow holes. Camping and 12 cabins. Rates: Tent camping $5 per campsite per night; cabin $45 per night for 1-4 people plus $5 for each additional person (6 persons maximum per cabin). Cabins very popular - reserve early.
